Chapter 6- Doolittle Acievement (Cadet Master Sergeant)

Duties and Responsibilities

Cadet First Sergeant- The CC's right hand. You represent the interest of the cadet enlisted personnel and the CC.

Understanding Human Behavior

People deals with things defensively, neurotically, psychologically, and psychopathologically

Defense Mechanisms

Defense Behavior-soften failures and ease guilt. Types include:

Rationalization: Twisting logic to interpret your actions as justified

Repression: Denying certain paonfil facts actually exist

Projection: Not being aware of fulfilling your needs through other people

Displacement: Shifting emotions. attitudes, or fanstasies from a person or object that is more socially acceptable

Compensation: Overcoming a weakness by trying really hard to excel in something else

Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Physiological Needs:

Food, water, rest, sleep, oxygen, and other basic survival needs

Safety Needs:

A need to feel safe from danger or pain

Belonging Needs:

A need to first have love and affection and second be affiliated with a group

Self Esteem

Others think well of you

Fulfillment

-Everyone is unique however we all have the same core needs

-People will willingly sacrifice to acieve worthwhile goals

Encouraging Effective Communication

-Present problems as a situation rather than as a judgement

-Some statements may trigger defense mechanisms

Motivation Skills

-Cadets must have pride in their accomplishments, recognize opportunities for advancement, have social status, and have respect from you and their co-workers (Look at Leadership 2000 for some techniques)

Recognition- people repeat behavior that leads to rewards and avoid behavior that does not. There are two types: informal and formal. Recognize as soon as possible and make the award in proportion to the achievement.

Individual Differences

People are formed by: Heredity-characteristics that you inherit, Environment-the type of house, school, and health conditions you were raised with, and Experience-your experiences that you witness

Discipline

Discipline is a state of order and obedience that is a result of regulations and orders

Self Discipline-doing a job because you see that it needs to be done

Task Discipline- a measure of how well you meet the challenges of your job

Group Discipline-teamwork

Imposed Discipline-enforced obedience to legal orders and regulations

Maintaining Discipline

-keys to a team is education and training

-practice makes perfect and repetition strengthens corrections

-set and example

-gain knowledge

-communicate

-enforce standards

General Douglas MacArthur: made supreme commander of UN forces in Korea

General James Harold Doolittle: led a flight of 16 b-25 bombers on a raid over Japan, he also aided in strategic bombing of Germany
